High unemployment rates leads to increased availability of talent. It seems like this would be a dream for HR managers, because they would have a plethora of talented people to choose from. Unfortunately, it is not always the perfect scenario because when there is too much talent to weed through, the best candidates can be easily overlooked. Therefore HR managers need to be cautious about hiring decisions and utilize the best methods possible when interviewing potential candidates.
When interviewing a lot of strong candidates, one method for selecting the "best of the best" is through Behavioral Interviewing. Rather than posing hypothetical questions to candidates, in behavioral interviewing recruiters ask candidates what they have done in the past in order to determine how they would act in similar, future situations. Research has shown that responses to behavioral interviewing questions are significantly better predictors of future behavior than responses to traditional interview questions.
Behavioral interviewing and traditional interviewing share similar formats but behavioral questions demand answers based on past, real-life experiences while traditional questions focus on what an individual thinks they would do in a situation. If they have already done something they are likely to do it again, thus validating behavioral interviewing as a prediction tool.
A few examples of behavioral interview questions are, "describe a time when you had to organize and coordinate a project from start to finish," or "describe a time in which you were faced with problems or stresses which tested your coping skills. What did you do?" This type of interview provides a more objective set of facts to make an employment decision than typical interview questions.
Give it a try! Incorporating behavioral interview style questions into your recruitment process will help you select the best candidates and give you a gauge of how they will behave in future situations. For more behavioral interviewing question examples visit:
